Recap, cuz that's what I do best...

I really am terrible at this blogging thing.  I always think I have time right before I go to bed, but no-- I'm usually just passing out immediately as soon as I hit the sack.  So, here I am, sitting in the garden of my host family's house in the suburbs of Toulouse (Ramonville, it's called).  Trying to take the time out to journal, or else I will forget all the wonderful things that I did and experienced here.  Hopefully it can be done in a few posts thematically, before I head off to the land of pit latrines and bucket showers (Africa, I didn't know I would be back so soon, haha).

What happened in between my last "real" post and right now?  Well, for one, I finished my first year of medical school at UIC.  Perhaps I will save the gruesome details of that for another day, but dang, it feels good to be a quarter of the way done.  My first year of living in Chicago was fantastic, aside from the whole school business.  The winter was quite mild (yay for beginner midwesterners!) and spring was great.  Too bad I am not there for the majority of the summer, since I am traveling right now.  But I think 3 weeks of summer in Chicago will suffice, seeing as I will be there for the next 3 years.  Ok, more on that later...

Francy fancy pants.  I don't have enough money to do fancy pants stuff all the time, but France is definitely a place where splurging is almost necessary.  Since I was going to be here for a month long medical student exchange, I decided to leave a few days early and start my trip off in Paris before heading down to Toulouse (which is in the south western region, Languedoc to be precise!) for my research project.  Met up with my dear Hopkins friend, Saba, for our jaunt across Paris and down to the small towns around the Mediterranean coast of France.  I thought I had it all planned out, haha, but it was so nerve wracking just trying to meet up with Saba at the airport in Paris.  Charles De Gaulle I HATE YOU.  Worst freaking airport in the Europe-- I can't say in the world, since I've been to worse ones (namely, Africa heh).  It was partly my fault that we couldn't meet up at the designated spot since well, it didn't exist.  I don't know how people picked other people up from the airport in the days before cell phones.  I mean, I had one, it just wasn't activated yet.  And Saba, coming from Egypt, didn't have a working cell phone either.  It was a game of waiting, and missed encounters and arguing with the info desk lady to try and get her to do a PA announcement thingy so we could find each other in the airport.  I swear, if this is what losing a child in the supermarket is like, no... it can't be.  It's gotta be WAY worse.  But we finally find each other and make it into Paris in one frazzled piece.

We stayed in the Marais arrondissement again, at the same place that me and Jessica stayed at the last time I was in Paris.  I love that little apartment, it's just so convenient.  And it was nice to see the things that I missed last time I was there... I made sure to bring my running shoes this time so that I would not have any knee problems... so what if I looked like a tourist haha.  Saba had been to Paris a number of years back, so we did some obligatory sight seeing, just to brush up, but mainly it was a time to catch up on what we were doing with our lives and enjoy being a Parisienne without doing all the requisite tourist trap attractions.  I made a point to schedule in the Sacre Coeur Basilica though, since I wasn't able to go last time because of my bum knee.  Although it was raining, we had a great view of Paris by starting from the top of the Montmartre instead of doing the normal walk up to the cathedral and back down.  Popped by the Moulin Rouge too... but it wasn't as spectacular as I thought it would be... since the original one burned down this one just seems so much less... authentic.

We wandered around the Seine and walked through the Luxembourg and Tuileres gardens, before stopping by the Louvre for a quick photo op.  Definitely made sure we did all the food stops too-- Pierre Hermes macarons, Angelina hot chocolate, which we ate (not drank, it was so dang thick) sitting in the Tuileries garden, admiring the view of the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower across the river... I introduced Saba to confit de canard and steak frites, as well as traditional viennoiserie pastries for breakfast.  And we did crepes!  YUM.  Obligatory hehehe.  I also went back to Marais to get the falafel sandwich that is so mouthwateringly delicious.  Paris was a bit of a blur, perhaps it was the second time around... but here are some highlights of what we saw.

Sick Post... wah.

But at least I have time to blog now?  I woke up this morning extra early so I could shower and get ready for work... but starting feeling really queasy after I had my morning cafe and croissant... so I just sat at the dining table for 10 minutes, hoping it would go away.  But it didn't. :(  Seeing as it is also high 40s F and rainy outside, and I barely packed any winter clothes, I opted to stay home... I have no idea if this is a cold or a stomach bug, but yes, sick.  SIGH.  What a great way to make an impression on the first week of my internship.  Oh well, I'll just try to work from home.  Toulouse is normally extremely sunny and warm during May and throughout the rest of the summer, but for whatever reason, fate did not smile upon me kindly and decided to throw in 2 weeks of crappy rainy windy freezing weather.  Maybe this is just so I can appreciate the crazy heat later when I'm in Uganda?  I have literally been wearing 5 layers of clothes since I arrived in Toulouse...

Meh I'm sleepy again.  I'll continue blogging after my nap.  Perhaps my body is revolting against the weather so that I can just stay in bed and be warm.

A whole year later...

Wow, it's been a year since my last post.  But here I am, traveling again.  Currently sitting in the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France (as if I need to put the country, ha).  Going to embark on an adventure with my dear friend Saba for a week before I start my research exchange at the medical school in Toulouse.  We'll see how much French I am able to pick up in one month's time.  At least I was able to order un cafe au lait without any problems.  :)

Will find time to update on how the first year of medical school went at UIC.  But for now, sleepyhead travels and adventures.

A bientot!

Oh Sweet US of A

I have officially been back to the US for one month now.  It seems like only yesterday that I was waiting at the airport in Nigeria, ready to leave for.... well, for good.  My last day of work at the CDC was April 16, 2011-- I was working pretty much until the end, somehow they piled up a whole bunch of stuff on my plate before my last day... gotta get the most bang for the buck I guess.  Is that the right phrase for this?  Haha.  Let me see, what have I done since I've been back in the good ol US of A... I was home for about 1.5 days before flying out to the Midwest.  Spent the majority of the time at my aunt's place in Indiana, but was in Chicago for two days, for a couple of interviews and hanging out with Sae-Rom.  Yay for friendsies times.  The interviews at UIC made it even harder to choose between Chicago and Cincinnati for med school... and the trip down to Cincinnati for a second visit didn't really bolster my interests towards the school.  I was sitting around for the next three days thinking about which school to choose, when I received an email for a scholarship notification to UIC.  Thank the Lord!  I feel so blessed that I got a scholarship, because it made the decision so much easier.  And with my aunt willing to "lend" me her apartment in Chicago, everything is so amazingly taken care of... YAY!  Now I feel so much more settled. :D

After spending some time in Indiana, I flew home, spent a day at home to get a very-much-needed haircut, and then drove up to Stanford to help out my old research mentor for about 2 weeks.  It was so nice to be back on campus, and the weather was sooo nice.  Stayed with my postdoc from the lab at her apartment... had a fun cat to play with :)  Got to see the entire lab gang again and help out in the lab for a bit... actually was quite busy while I was there. I was invited to a wedding at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco over the last weekend and that was fun too... felt like it's been forever since I've been in the city.  Although parking up on that crazy hill wasn't so fun.  Finally got home a few days ago... it's been nice just bumming around... I signed up for 24 hr fitness so I've been attending a few of the group fitness classes--kickboxing is fun!  Did yoga today, tomorrow I'll try zumba.  Yay for exercise :)

Now, I've got 3 months to just.. do ___________ before school starts in August.   What's on my bucket list to do?  Train for a half marathon!  Learn Spanish!  Learn how to sew!  Get rid of my weirdo t-shirt tan from Africa! :D

Lagos Pix

Pictures from my trip to Lagos. :)

Family friend's pet turtle... some 20+ years old!

Pet parrots... they had one to begin with, then found out that wild parrots would fly up to the cage to sneak food, so the stewards would catch the wild ones... I think total they had 6 or 7 parrots!

Parrots eat fresh corn and red pepper seeds (they spit out the actual pepper part)

Snowy egret?  The African version?  Just chillin on the green at the Ikoyi Country Club (golf course)

Golf course! Palm trees!

Tee off... or whatever they say in golf lingo.

Uncle Oscar!!

"Du Du"- mastiff/german shepherd/pittbull?  mix, sort of... actually called a boerboel, which is a South African breed
